Bartholomew the Bookworm and the Bully Badger: A Story About Standing up for Yourself
Once upon a time, nestled amongst towering shelves in a busy city library, lived a bookworm named Bartholomew. Bartholomew was the smallest and most unusual member of the city community. Some animals didn’t even know he existed, whereas others thought he was a bit weird. Sure, Bartholomew wasn’t the most popular around, but he didn’t mind it. He loved peace and quiet, munching on dusty dictionaries and ancient atlases and learning new things, from the tiniest insect to the furthest star.
One sunny afternoon, when the library was packed with all kinds of animals, from mice to bears, Bartholomew was sitting in the aisle, reading a book about brave knights. Just then, a shadow loomed over him. It was Bruno, the biggest, burliest badger around. He was passing by with a group of friends. Bruno wasn’t known for his manners. In fact, he often teased Bartholomew because he was different.
‘‘Hey, who do we have here, a boring bookworm!’’ Bruno rumbled, snatching the book from Bartholomew’s grasp. ‘‘Let me see what you’re reading. Bet it’s something ridiculous as always.’’
Some animals turned in their direction, overhearing the awkward situation.
Bartholomew’s heart thumped like a drum in his tiny chest. But today, he decided he wasn’t going to put up with Bruno’s bullying anymore.
Taking a deep breath, Bartholomew gave Bruno a condemning gaze and slowly but loudly (so everyone could hear) asked the question:
‘‘ARE. YOU. OKAY?’’ hence, indicating to others around them that Bruno’s behavior was NOT okay. By asking this question, Bartholomew also didn’t give Bruno the satisfaction of a reaction from himself.
Bruno was visibly startled by the question but wouldn’t let go, so he continued. ‘‘Obviously, I’m not good when I see you!’’
Bartholomew was a bit hurt by the bad words, but he stood his ground and asked, ‘‘What’s your intention, Bruno? Did you mean to offend me now?’’ hence giving Bruno a mirror to understand the consequences of his behavior.
...
Bruno used some harsh words when referring to Bartholomew’s looks and small size, and he forcefully took the book he was reading. How would you react if someone called you names and took your things? What are some phrases that you could use to fight back? (This question prompts readers to consider how they would react in Bartholomew’s place and prepares them to defend themselves if needed.)
