Hannah and Helen’s School Day: A Story About Friendship
In a big forest nestled between two villages lived two hedgehog friends, Hannah with her soft, chocolate-colored quills and Helen with a spiky mane the color of sunlit wheat. They were practically inseparable, always sharing snacks and adventures.
One crisp autumn afternoon, it was just another busy school day at the Greenmount School. Hannah and Helen greeted each other and quietly listened to the teacher’s morning lesson while sitting next to each other. Soon, the teacher handed the results of last week’s exam. Seeing that her friend Helen got all the answers correct for the first time ever, Hannah squeaked excitedly: ‘‘That’s amazing, Helen, well done, I’m so happy for you!’’
Helen blushed a little. She had never scored so high before, but she and Hannah had studied hard for this exam. ‘‘Well, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you!’’
Soon came snack time, which they both loved. Helen noticed her friend Hannah was struggling to open the packaging of her apple bar snack with her tiny paws. Seeing her friend’s difficulty, Helen scurried over. ‘‘Here, let me help,’’ she offered. She managed to break it open with ease, revealing the yummy apple bar inside and handed it back to her friend. ‘‘Thanks, Helen,’’ Hannah said, offering a grateful smile. ‘‘That was tricky!’’
Helen chuckled. ‘‘No problem, Hannah. That’s what friends are for!’’
After their snack, it was playtime. Helen bounced with excitement. ‘‘Come on, Hannah, let’s go play tag with the others!’’
Hannah, however, had other plans. ‘‘Actually, Helen,’’ she said, ‘‘I was hoping to finish my drawing of the flower garden we saw yesterday. I’m really
excited to do it.’’
Helen stopped short, her eyes filled with understanding. ‘‘Oh, of course, Hannah! Your drawings are always amazing. I can’t wait to see
them!’’
While Helen loved active games all the time, Hannah sometimes liked her quiet time to unleash her creativity.
After a while, Hannah finished her drawing and glanced at the lively group playing tag, feeling ready to join them. Putting down her drawing, she hesitantly approached them. However, the thought of interrupting their game made her shy away.
Suddenly, Helen, who had been observing her friend, stopped mid-tag and trotted over. ‘‘Hey everyone,’’ she announced, ‘‘make some space for Hannah! She wants to join the game!’’
...
Who are your best friends? Did it ever happen that you wanted to play different things? How did you decide what to play together? Maybe you
did separate things, like Hannah and Helen, or found another game you both enjoyed. (This question helps readers understand that friends can have
different preferences and encourages them to find ways to compromise and have fun together.)
