Harry the Hamster and the Much-wanted Gift: A Story About Not Getting What You Want
Once upon a time, in a bustling city called Hamsterdam, lived a family of curious hamsters. Papa Nibble, with his short, golden fur and a twinkle in his eye, Mama Snuggles, known for her gentle squeaks, and their two energetic pups, Harry and Hannah. Harry, with his fluffy brown fur and a nose forever twitching, couldn’t resist a good zoom through their intricate tunnel system. Hannah, her fur the color of toasted oats, loved burrowing in mountains of soft bedding and collecting shiny bottle caps.
One bright afternoon, the hamster family scurried to the bustling market in the heart of the meadow to buy some food. There were stalls overflowing with sunflower seeds, plump blueberries, and delicious pumpkins. Harry, however, was drawn to a stall overflowing with playthings. Perched proudly on a display was a transparent running ball, promising endless rolling adventures. Harry’s whiskers twitched with excitement. ‘‘Wow!’’ he squeaked, his voice high-pitched. ‘‘That’s the most amazing thing ever!’’ He called Mama Snuggles and pointed with his tiny paw, his eyes pleading. ‘‘Can I have it, Mama? Please, please!’’

Mama Snuggles smiled warmly and crouched down to Harry’s level. ‘‘Wow, it’s a very exciting ball, Harry,’’ she agreed. ‘‘But it’s not on our shopping list for today, I’m afraid. Besides, remember all the wonderful playthings you already have to keep you entertained?’’
Harry considered this for a moment. He did already have a magnificent running wheel, which he used every day, a fantastic system of tunnels, perfect for speedy sprints and exploring unseen corners, and also a collection of smooth pebbles, and a chew toy shaped like a carrot, which he loved playing with.
‘‘But Mama,’’ Harry squeaked, ‘‘none of them are like this ball! I could roll all over the place in it! It’s the only thing I want in a whole world!’’
Mama Snuggles understood Harry’s disappointment. She explained gently, ‘‘I love that you’re always able to find the most interesting things around you. I think that makes you really special. You sure know what’s fun, my little hamster. You see, it’s okay to recognize that something is great, but it
doesn’t mean that you need to have it right now. We can’t always have everything we want, Harry. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun with what we already own. It’s important to be thankful for what you already have and use the most out of it. Think about your running wheel and how much you love running on it. Maybe you can set a new record today, or you and Hannah can have an exciting race through your tunnels again!’’
Harry thought for a second about what Mama Snuggles said, then glanced back at the mesmerizing running ball.
