Sarah the Squirrel and Her Busy Day: A Story About Traffic Safety
Once upon a time, in a bustling town filled with friendly animal families, lived a little squirrel named Sarah. Sarah had a bushy tail that swished with excitement and a nose that twitched with curiosity. Today was a bright and sunny day, perfect for a trip to the park with her mommy! As Sarah and her mum scurried down the sidewalk, Sarah saw something amazing. A shiny yellow ice cream truck jingled its bells, its colorful sprinkles sparkling in the sun! Sarah squealed, wanting an ice cream in a cone more than anything, so she tried to run towards it.
‘‘Whoa there, little one,’’ Mommy Squirrel said gently, holding Sarah’s paw tight. ‘‘Remember, we only walk on the sidewalk. It’s the safe place for squirrels like us.’’
Sarah pouted a little. ‘‘But what if the ice cream truck leaves?’’
Mommy Squirrel smiled. ‘‘Don’t worry, Sarah. We’ll get there safely. See those painted lines on the road? That’s called a crosswalk.’’
They reached the crosswalk, where a friendly owl in a brown and white speckled coat stood waiting. He was the teacher in Sarah’s school. ‘‘Hello, Mr. Hoot!’’ Sarah greeted politely.
Mr. Hoot hooted softly. ‘‘Hello, Sarah! I see you, too, are waiting patiently. The crosswalk is for crossing safely. We wait for a special light to turn green.’’
Sarah looked up. High above, a big traffic light had three round shapes: red, yellow, and green. Right now, the red one glowed brightly. ‘‘Red means stop,’’ Mr. Hoot explained.
“Just like when we say ‘red light, stop tight’ during our games!’’ Sarah giggled. They used to play that game all the time!

What traffic safety rules did Mr. Hoot remind Sarah about before crossing the street? Can you name them? (This question helps readers recall the specific traffic rules mentioned in the story, like waiting for the green light and looking both ways.)
